PBR held free “Build Your Career in Biotechnology” workshops in Spring 2007 and Spring 2009. These workshops represent PBR’s desire to encourage and equip local undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in biotechnology.
The 2009 workshop was held at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and featured an introductory talk by Dr. Chris Gunter, Director of Research Affairs, focusing on the Institute’s mission for research, economic development and education. Tuesday James, District Manager of Kelly Scientific Resources, then gave a talk on resumes, interview skills and how to present your self professionally. The last event was a very informative and dynamic question and answer session with a panel of academic, non-profit and private industry professionals including:
- Dr. Adam Hott of the HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach Department,
- Dr. Khursheed Anwer, President of Egen,
- Dr. Edward Meehan of the UAH Structural Biology Lab,
- Tuesday James of Kelly Scientific Resources and
- Dr. Jeff Sparks of Egen.
Each participating student was also assigned a brief session with one of the many human resource professionals and English professors who volunteered their time to read and critique each student’s resume. In addition to all of these programs, participants were also given Student PBR t-shirts free of charge.
